I was interested in the video provided by Alec Couros. It made me aware of the impact of participatory media on how we learn is changing. The points he made about the learning environment from the traditional classroom setting, to this internet world–where you know there are “bad” things online, but that’s outweighed by the good stuff you can learn, it truly hit home.
I admit that I use the internet to do research. The internet has taught me many “how to’s” (i.e. my cousin was having problems turning her car alarm off, so I went online and learned how to disable her car alarm, or when I wanted to learn how to write a blog effectively I went online), I have quite frequently used the internet to help me find the answers. I am sure that I am not alone–which means, how we learn, and from who changes. What does happen to a traditional or more formal learning setting, when they are competing with informal learning settings (i.e. wikipedia).
For a professor or teacher who lives within this digital age, how do you become an effective teacher? The world has become more open, and this means we have the ability to learn from a wider range of teachers. What I have done during week 2 is to review the blogs, and to look at many of the tools that were provided in Alec Couros video–this is all part of the learning process for me…learning to become a better teacher, and more importantly a better student.
