The Art of Learning

Getting there…week #2

I was  interested in the video provided by Alec Couros.  It made me aware of the impact of participatory media on how we learn is changing.  The points he made about the learning environment from the traditional classroom setting, to this internet world–where you know there are “bad” things online, but that’s outweighed by the good stuff you can learn, it truly hit home.

I admit that I use the internet to do research.  The internet has taught me many “how to’s” (i.e. my cousin was having problems turning her car alarm off, so I went online and learned how to disable her car alarm, or when I wanted to learn how to write a blog effectively I went online), I have quite frequently used the internet to help me find the answers.  I am sure that I am not alone–which means, how we learn, and from who changes.   What does happen to a traditional or more formal learning setting, when they are competing with informal learning settings (i.e. wikipedia).

For a professor or teacher who lives within this digital age, how do you become an effective teacher?  The world has become more open, and this means we have the ability to learn from a wider range of teachers.  What I have done during week 2 is to review the blogs, and to look at many of the tools that were provided in Alec Couros video–this is all part of the learning process for me…learning to become a better teacher, and more importantly a better student.

Ready and anxious to learn…

This is my first attempt at blogging, and I know that I’ll make mistakes along the way.  More importantly,  is what I expect to learn through this class.  I am in the midst of my PhD program.  I have always wanted to be a Professor, or a Teacher.  I believe that the best thing that we can do for each other is to share knowledge.  It can have a profound difference in your life–knowledge, and applying it appropriately gains one wisdom.  I know that I am far from being wise, but I continue to strive to learn.  For this reason I decided that if I want to be part of the new generation of Professors or Teacher’s, I  need to become familiar with the new tools that are available for people to learn and/or teach.  So here I am…

This first week I signed up for DIIGO, and I was impressed.   To see what is available for digital reading, learning, and to help us retain the information that we’re reading, so that we can share it with others, can definitely enhance the learning or teaching experience.  The only problem that I have with the DIIGO is that I have not received my confirmation that I have set up my account successfully.  So I am waiting..I’m here..I’m ready…and anxious to learn.
